5.0 de 5 estrellas Love this laptop!

I was in the market for a new laptop and knew I wanted something reasonably powerful with an AMD processor. This checked all the boxes and wasn't too heavy or big. I also knew I intended to upgrade the storage and memory straight away so I wasn't too picky about the M.2 or memory configuration.

That said 16GB of memory is solid for most things you can do although I have no idea about the timings it is running in dual channel so speed is optimized right out of the box. I purchased 64GB of Corsair Vengeance SODIMMs (2x32GB) with CL20 timing and they worked right out of the box with no issues whatsoever.

The disk space at 1TB isn't fantastic but most people could probably get by with this and be just fine, I produce music on the road and also play games to pass the time. I ended up purchasing two 2TB Samsung 970 Evo Plus NVMe drives and upgraded the C drive to 2TB and added a 2TB D drive as well. This isn't for the feint of heart as it requires you to reinstall Windows 10 and to reinstall all of the laptop specific/platform specific drivers. While it's not too hard, it's not a beginner friendly option. I can't comment on the performance between the stock NVMe drive and the replacements but I can say it boots insanely fast and run extremely well.

I also upgraded Windows 10 Home to Windows 10 Pro with a legitimate pro key from Microsoft for $99 on their website. I know you can find cheaper keys but I really don't trust them and anyway $99 isn't soul crushingly expensive and I like the peace of mind I get knowing it's completely legitimate and I won't ever have any problems with it. This process was smooth and super easy and took all of 5 minutes to complete.

The keyboard on the laptop is probably the best laptop keyboard I've ever used, the key travel isn't much but it's tactile and a little clicky. I love mechanical keyboards so it's a nice touch here and the keyboard doesn't feel the least bit mushy like some laptop keyboards can be. I also must say the LEDs are bright and look fantastic. Though I can't help but feel Asus may have gone a little overboard with the RGB you can turn off unwanted RGB elements so I can't really complain about it and it looks amazing in the dark.

Laptop thickness and weight is just fine as well as the overall dimension of the laptop and it's not bad lugging through airports on using on planes. My previous laptop was a 17" and I wasn't in love with the size or weight. 15.6" seems spot on for a laptop you intend to take with you everywhere. It's also extremely solidly built, there's no creaking or weird sounds coming out of the mechanical bits of the chassis and the hinges on the screen are extremely supportive and when typing the screen isn't jiggling around. You put the screen up and it's rock solid and that is fantastic as far as I'm concerned. The numeric keypad on the mouse track pad seems OK but I haven't really used it for much but it does function well enough though it kind of feels "gimmicky" to me. My only hardware gripe is I wish it has a couple more USB ports but that's minor as you can easily add a hub. I haven't used a laptop with a "mux" (I think that's what it's called) switch but I like that the laptop uses the built in graphics when it doesn't need all the power of the 3080 which helps with heat and power. If it gives up a few frames in a game I'm personally OK with that sacrifice to get more time when on battery.

I can't comment on any bloatware that might come installed on the laptop as I removed the original 1TB NVMe m.2 drive before I even powered on the laptop and upgraded as stated above. I do however find Asus Armory Crate and Aura Creator lacking. The laptop stats screen is great and informative, but I feel the color settings are clunky and either lacking in much customization options, or overly complex in Aura Creator. With regards to Aura Creator it's apparently extremely buggy and I can't actually apply a custom created color which is annoying I get an error doing this. I don't like Armory Crate on my desktop and apart from the laptop stats page, I don't like it on my laptop either.

I'm about 30 days in and so far I'm very happy with this machine. Asus only designates one ROG Strix SCAR each year and this one deserves the title.

I got three of these, one for myself and one for each of my gamer girls. Yeah, it's a big Christmas. I'll update as time goes on as I will have the experiences of three users.

Right now, I can say off the top of my head that if you're a power user, you can bypass the IGPU (integrated Radeon) using the USB-C 3.1 port in the back of the laptop. I got a USB-C to DP adapter and 4k graphics pour out fast directly from the DGPU (the Nvidia RTX 3080).

I am also getting a USB-C hub to use as a docking station and also to read SD Cards. Yeah, the laptop doesn't have a card reader. It doesn't have a cam either. My heart is broken and bleeds peanut butter.

You can find many, many USB videos about this stuff. Some of them get a little hyper about the 15 inch display being connected to the IGPU. Well, it's true. I used to think this was bad like many of the YouTubers. But there's no bottleneck that I can detect so I have to trust Asus knew what they were doing when they decided to architect it this way.

Technically, routing the graphics from the DGPU to the IGPU to the laptop display is a little bit slower, but not in any noticeable way to me so far. And there's always using the back USB port to bypass the IGPU entirely.

Also, we've been playing with the Oculus Quest 2 (or Meta Quest or whatever). So far it seems to be happier working directly off of the DGPU but I've heard there's a workaround for it to work off of the IGPU.

UPDATE: 60 Days

So I've had this machine for a little over 2 months and I'm still very happy with it. There's only one real problem that I found and it is with the Meta Quest VR. I don't know if this is a bug on the Asus side of things or if it lies with the Oculus App. The video signal seems to go to the headset either via Wi-Fi or direct USB cable link. That's called the Oculus Link and Air Link. For some reason the app wants to process that video with the integrated GPU which just doesn't work. You either get a black screen or just three dots waiting. There's an inelegant solution which is to simply go into the device manager of Windows and disable the integrated GPU. That will allow Air Link and Oculus Link to work because then they are able to use the dedicated GPU. That might make a couple of other things go wonky for you so be sure to enable the integrated GPU when you're done with PCVR.

Right now the official story from Oculus is that it's all in beta anyway and that's great if you can get it to work but it's not officially supported yet. So this may all be a non-issue once it gets out of beta. Also, there's another solution called the Virtual Desktop which will allow PCVR to work. That is a separate paid app that you can get from the Oculus store. It streams the video to the headset independently of the Oculus link and Air Link. So that is a completely different way to do PCVR with the Quest. It's also not officially supported but seems to work great for lots of people.

So that's just really one application (PCVR) that I've had an issue with. And I think it's a problem that will be solved once it's out of beta and they are able to make it use the dedicated GPU.

Otherwise this laptop has been amazeballs and I still highly recommend it.
Amazeballs.

UPDATE: 1 YEAR LATER

I am still loving this laptop. All the Meta Quest 2 (Oculus) issues have been resolved by Meta. After all, it was always their bug to fix. :)

I finally found my first game that only gives me about 40 fps with all settings on "ultra high" quality. That's the new Plague's Tale game. I had to set the game at simply "high" quality and I'm back at 60 fps. Not like I'm worried, but we may yet see 60 fps on "ultra high" after some driver updates.

1.0 de 5 estrellas Probably a Lemon

I'll start by saying EVERYTHING but the performance of this laptop is great. I purchased this laptop at at the end of August and it was shipped to my wife in September. I am currently deployed in Eastern Europe with the Army so she shipped it to me. Upon receiving it in October, I noticed from day one the the performance of this laptop was no where near what it should be. I tried everything, to include obvious windows updates, driver updates, bios updates, game updates, etc but none of them worked. I always keep the laptop up to date on everything except for when I try reverting back to older versions. I cant even play games on low settings despite this laptop having the best specs of laptops on the market. I have deleted and re-downloaded games and updates to make sure its not the games and every time it wont work. The problem I am encountering is the laptop randomly lags out of video games every time I try to play. When it does let me play (before lagging out) my FPS rubberbands terribly between 6 and 100 or-so FPS. This is unplayable. the reason I know something must be wrong with the laptop is my previous laptop, which was not a gaming laptop, ran video games better than this one does. I have not once had the experience that youtube reviews have showed of getting 200+ fps in games. I wouldn't even be upset if I just got 100fps in games, but I literally cannot even play before it kicks me out. many times it is the first game after turning it on that it kicks me out of games and continues lagging out after that. Other times its every 5 or so games of rocket league, or every game or two of Warzone or Battlefield 2042. I am deployed away from my family and friends for a year and playing video games was supposed to be the one release from this mess here but I cannot even do that. I believe I probably just received a lemon but it has ruined the gaming laptop experience for me. Hopefully the seller can help resolve this issue

4.0 de 5 estrellas Order an AX210 WiFi card for it now!
Reseñado en los Estados Unidos el 25 de abril de 2022
The laptop is great. Plays just about everything I have in my Steam account at the highest resolution possible. The MediaTek WiFi 6 MT7921 is hot garbage. I mean really hot garbage. No amount of driver update and rollback, enabling and disabling the device makes it finds networks regardless of distance. It literally just can't see them periodically. Over time it throttles down connections. Google search the WiFi card and you'll see a ton of people with the same issue. We all did the same thing. Ordered an Intel AX210 Wifi module and swapped it out. Now it's a perfect laptop.

So, got this because I like mobile gaming. Price is a little high, but reasonable considering the chip shortage. I wanted the test processor/GPU combo, so I ordered this. I got it, and ran Red Dear Redemption 2, a famous resource hog, and I was getting 85-136 FPS in turbo (running RDR2 benchmark) -- pretty darn good. I also ran Mount and Blade" Bannerlord II, and that game does not even begin to test this beast until you get into larger sieges, but butter smooth in turbo. The device looks pretty "gamer" and blingy, so that is a negative if you don't like that -- I am indifferent. There are some custom plates you can put on it with the ROG logo on it if you like that sort of thing. All in all, the best laptop I have ever purchased. Oh, it is good for video processing, too..... Takes EVERYTHING I throw at it. Recommended.

Pros:
Stupid fast system, probably good for gaming for a while
Fans not too intrusive (You have to accept some noise if you want the performance.....)
Attractive, well built chassis
Screen has eye-popping color

Cons:
No camera
Odd port placement -- USB on the back!?!?!?
